What Are Cannabis Vape Cartridges?
And How Do They Work?
A question we get asked often by patients is “What are those vape cartridges?” So, we thought we would write this article to provide some insight on this topic.
1. Cannabis Cartridges
Vape cartridges, or “carts” as they are sometimes called, are simply little vessels filled with cannabis concentrate oil, that are used with a vaping pen device, also sometimes called the battery.
The battery heats up the oil inside the cartridge at a low temperature and turns it into a cool, inhalable mist. There is very little odor, and the effects are felt quickly by the user.
Vape carts have become popular because they are portable, discreet, easy to use and don’t smell nearly as bad as smoked cannabis. They also don’t produce smoke and the associated toxic chemicals, which makes them a much healthier option compared to smoking.
2. What Is So Great About These Vape Cartridges?
One of the main benefits of carts is that they are very easy to use. You don’t have to prepare the device. There is no flower grinding, rolling the joint, none of that business. You just simply pick up the device, press a button (sometimes you don’t even have to do that), and take a puff. It’s really that simple!
They are also very small. So they are easy to carry around and use on the go.
Vape carts are also easy to dose. Dosing can be a concern, especially for first time patients. Vaping makes dosing more precise. Each inhale is going to be very similar. So the patient has more control over dosing.
One vape pen brand called Pax actually is beginning to roll out some pretty amazing technology around these vape pens. They have an app that can control how much oil the device lets you consume. You can even set a limit, so that you don’t take more than you want. You can also track your sessions and monitor how effective each session was at helping your symptoms.
3. The Different Types of Pre-filled Cartridges
There are many different types of cartridges available. There are carts made from CO2 extraction, which is a popular method. CO2 extraction is a very clean and verified safe way of making cartridge compatible oil.
The CO2 extraction process does not use any controversial petroleum based solvents like butane or propane. CO2 extracted cannabis oil has the right consistency to be used in a vape cartridge. The oil has to be the right consistency. To thick or thin, and it doesn’t work right.
The other great thing about CO2 extracted oil is that it contains some terpenes. Terpenes are compounds inside the cannabis plant that play many important roles, such as providing health benefits and also affecting aroma and taste. We will dive deep into terpenes at another time!
There is also distillate based oil cartridges. Distillate is a very pure process that basically refines the cannabis oil to specific compounds, like pure THC or CBD. This can be good, but also bad. It’s good because it’s a very pure oil.
The downside is that no terpenes are left behind. Also, because distillate oil can be too thick, a cutting agent has to be added back in. Many times, terpenes are added back in, or an oil like MCT oil (coconut oil).
Cartridges can also come in many different flavors and varieties. For example, carts can come in certain thc/cbd ratios, such as a 1:1 ratio. This is great for controlled relief. There are many different kinds of carts available. We are constantly getting new varieties in the store all the time. There is something for everyone.
