WHAT IS CANNA BUTTER?
As y’all know, we love creating original content for you guys. Something we went over last week was the topic of AVB, which will play into what we will be talking about today: Cannabis butter!
1. WHAT IS AVB?
If you love edibles, but don’t know where to start when it comes to making your own, then this article is for you. We will be going over how to make cannabis butter, whether using AVB (already vaped bud) or using the oven method to decarb your flower.
Cannabutter is honestly one of the simplest ways to infuse your favorite food items. Some people can find it tricky, though, since you can’t just throw your pretty green flowers into the mixing bowl. The very first step to making your cannabutter is activating the THC in your cannabis which essentially activates the psychoactive potential of your edibles.
To activate the THC in your cannabis, you must first heat it up slowly at a low temperature. This process is called decarboxylation, and it is essential when it comes to making infused food items.
The oven method is what most people choose to do, and it is a very simple process! Just take your cannabis, around 7-10 grams, grind it up, put it on a baking sheet with some aluminum foil, and bake at 225 degrees fahrenheit for 45 minutes, and then let cool for 30 minutes. When you do put the flower onto the foil, try to crumple up the foil so that the cannabis is not directly touching the baking sheet, but instead, it is resting on the crumpled up foil. This will make sure that the flower doesn’t burn from direct contact to the baking sheet. Once this process is done, you will have successfully decarbed your flower!
The other way to decarb your flower is using the AVB method. However, only some people can do this because it requires having a vaporizer. So, for those of you who do have a PAX vaporizer or a Volcano Vaporizer, or any other type of cannabis vaporizer, all you have to do is save your flower after you use it in your vaporizer! All you are doing when you heat up your cannabis in your vaporizer is decarbing it. But, the cool thing about vaporizers is that you get to medicate with your flower, and then save it up to make butter. With the oven method, you do not get to enjoy you cannabis and medicate with it before it goes into the oven to be decarbed. So, vaporizers are definitely a great investment.
2. HOW TO USE AVB
So, now let’s start with how to make your cannabutter!
1 cup butter
1 cup cannabis (7-10 grams) (ground up and decarbed)
1 cup water
First, you will start the process of melting the butter.
Add 1 cup of unmelted butter with 1 cup of water into a large pot or a large saucepan.
Simmer on low to let the butter melt.
The addition of water helps prevent the butter from burning.
Once the butter is melted into the water, you can add in your ground up / decarbed flower.
After the cannabis is added, you will then let it simmer. Maintain a low heat (above 160ºF, but never above 200ºF). Let this simmer for 2-3 hours, stirring every 30 minutes.
IMPORTANT: the mixture should never come to a full boil.
After 2-3 hours, you will then strain the cannabutter!
Set a funnel on top of the container you plan to store your butter in, and line the top of the container with cheesecloth. When the butter is cooled off, pour it over the cheesecloth funnel, and allow the liquid to strain through.
After you strain the cannabutter, set the container with the strained butter into the fridge to cool off.
Water will most likely form at the bottom of the container when the butter cools and separates from it. To remove the water, simply remove the solid butter with a knife, and drain out the water.
As always, dose carefully.
